Losing followers

Why am I losing followers on Instagram? 7 causes, and how to tell

Losing followers on Instagram usually comes down to two things: Instagram clearing out fake and inactive accounts, or people taking back follows they only made to get one in return. A few a week is normal.

Why do I keep losing followers on Instagram? 7 reasons

They fall into three groups: what Instagram does, what other people do, and what you post. The first two explain most drops.

Instagram’s sideNothing you did.
  1. Looks like: overnight, many gone at once

Instagram ran a purge of fake and inactive accounts

If it looks like Instagram is removing followers from your account, this is usually why. Instagram regularly deletes bot, fake and long-inactive accounts, and each one vanishes from every follower list at the same moment. In May 2026 one sweep was big enough that follower counts fell across the platform (Gulf News). Meta told reporters it’s a routine process and that active followers weren’t affected (The Peninsula).

What to doNothing. Those accounts weren’t seeing your posts, so your real reach hasn’t changed.

  2. Looks like: a drop weeks after a big batch arrived

    Empty accounts got cleaned up

When a big batch of followers arrives at once and many of them are empty accounts, they’re the first to go in a cleanup, often weeks later.

What to doOpen a few of the accounts that left. No posts and no profile photo? That’s your cause.

Other people’s sideReal people change their minds.
  1. Looks like: a steady trickle

    Follow-backs got undone after follow-for-follow

In open follow-for-follow, nobody checks that the follow-back stays. Plenty of people follow, collect their follow-back, then quietly unfollow later.

What to doExpect some of it, and lean toward exchanges where the follows are checked: follow for follow, with your follows checked.

  2. Looks like: about 100 gone at once

You undid the follows in an exchange SocialFollow members

On SocialFollow you follow 10 accounts and 100 members follow you back. The follows are checked again after delivery, so if you unfollow those 10, the 100 go back. Members are real people, so a few may unfollow later anyway.

What to doKeep the 10 follows in place. How it works, step by step has the full rules.

Your sideThe slow kind.
  1. Looks like: a dip right after a post

    You changed what you post

People followed you for a topic, a style or a voice. When that shifts, some of them leave, usually right after the posts that feel different.

What to doKeep your core topic recognisable, and bring new ones in gradually.

  2. Looks like: slow losses after a break or a burst

    Your posting rhythm changed

A long gap or a sudden burst both stand out in someone’s feed. There’s no magic number: Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has said no fixed number of posts works for everyone, and that you should pick a schedule you can sustain.

What to doPick a pace you can keep up for months, not a week.

  3. Looks like: a slow drift away

    Too much selling

When most of your posts ask for something, the people who came for the content drift away.

What to doKeep promotional posts the exception, not the rule.

Is it normal to lose followers?

Yes. Most accounts lose a few followers every week, as people tidy their feeds and accounts get deactivated. What counts is the balance.

Example week
Gained+40
Lost−12

Still growing. That’s a normal week.

It’s worth a closer look if you lose more than you gain for several weeks in a row, or after every single post.

How to check who unfollowed you

Instagram doesn’t tell you when someone unfollows. To check one person:

  1. Search your Followers list for their name.
  2. Or open their profile and look for yourself in their Following list.

Want the full list? Export your followers from Accounts Center (Your information and permissions, then Export your information) twice, a few days apart, and compare.

How to slow follower loss

  • Remove bot followers yourselfProfile, then Followers, then Remove. They aren’t notified, and the next cleanup has less to take. Not sure which are bots? Check your new followers this way.
  • Stay on the topic people followed you forNew directions are fine. Bring them in gradually.
  • Grow with real accountsReal people stay longer than empty accounts. On SocialFollow, members follow you back in exchange for 10 follows: free Instagram followers.
  • Check Account Status if your reach drops tooSettings, then Account Status, shows whether any of your content was removed or your features are limited.

Losing followers: questions

Does Instagram remove followers?

Yes. When Instagram deletes or disables fake and inactive accounts, they disappear from every follower list at once. Meta called its May 2026 cleanup of inactive accounts a routine process and said active followers weren’t affected.

Why did I lose so many followers on Instagram overnight?

Usually because Instagram removed fake or inactive accounts, not because of anything you posted. If lots of accounts saw a drop on the same day, it was a cleanup. Nothing needs fixing: those accounts weren’t seeing your posts.

Why do I keep losing followers on Instagram?

A steady trickle usually means follow-backs being undone after follow-for-follow, or a change in what or how often you post. Match the shape of your drop to the table at the top of this page.

How do I check who unfollowed me on Instagram?

Instagram doesn’t notify you. Search your Followers list for their name, or check their Following list for yours. For a full list, export your followers from Accounts Center twice and compare the two.

Is it normal to lose followers on Instagram?

Yes. Most accounts lose a few followers each week. It’s only a problem if you lose more than you gain for several weeks in a row, or after every post.
