How the Instagram Explore Page Algorithm Works

So, what’s the explore page? Simply put, it’s a curation of posts and stories from accounts you don’t already follow that the Instagram algorithm collects based off of your personal account data. That’s right – the Instagram explore page is personalized. So it’s actually not accurate to say “the Instagram explore page.” There are explore pages for every account on Instagram, and they all look different!

For example, I follow a lot of of bookstagram, fashion, and interior design accounts. Therefore my Instagram explore page looks different to someone’s account who is into health and wellness or beauty bloggers

The explore page doesn’t just show you new posts, either. You can shop, watch IGTV, and search hashtags that are on posts you commonly like. The Instagram explore page is designed to open up a whole new world of Instagram to you.

Unlocking the Instagram Explore Page Algorithm

The algorithm that curates the posts on your explore page is one of Instagram’s biggest mysteries. Before we dive into it, it’s important to remember that an algorithm is just an algorithm, and trying to game the algorithm will never be more successful than putting genuine time and effort into your brand. That being said, here are some things you can do to make it easier to show up on someone’s Instagram explore page:

Instagram loves video content

With IGTV and stories, videos are steadily growing more and more popular on Instagram. They also have the added benefit of autoplaying when someone is in the explore tab. They’re more likely to grab someone’s attention that way. However, a great photo will receive priority over a video that’s been rushed.

High engagement is awarded

The cat has been out of the bag about Instagram engagement for a while, but did you know that it affects which posts end up on the Instagram explore page, too? A post that has high engagement within the first 45 minutes after you post has a much higher chance of making its way to the explore page. It also has to be posted relatively recently – your year-old posts probably won’t make it onto the page.

No-repost zone

While reposting has its uses, if an account has a large amount of reposts, it will be more difficult to get onto the explore page. Original content is rewarded and reposts will be demoted on the explore page. You can still repost, but change it up if the aim is to get onto the explore page!

Visual stories win

Instagram is a visual platform, so they prioritize visual content. Interesting stories that don’t overload on text will receive preference to super-wordy stories.

How to Get On the Instagram Explore Page

Now that you know about the algorithm, let’s talk about exactly how to get on the explore page. There’s no one proven strategy, but to increase your chances, try these tips:

Pay attention to your analytics

Your Instagram engagement is important, especially when it comes to making it onto the explore page. Instagram insights give you an incredibly valuable tool in the form of insights. You can see how many people got to your post from the explore page by clicking “View Insights” under a recent post. It’s a good idea to pay attention to your analytics in general. Take inspiration from your best-performing content for later success!

Post at the best times.

Engagement within the first 45 minutes after you post will take you a long way. A big part of that is posting at the best times for your target audience. Find your best posting times by going to your profile and clicking “View Insights.” At the bottom of the “Audience” tab, Instagram shows you optimal posting times. If it’s the middle of the night for most of your followers when you’re posting, all your hard work goes to waste! No need to set an alarm, though – just use an Instagram scheduler.

Keep your content consistent.

Now that Instagram stories are making it onto the explore page, a cohesive brand aesthetic is similarly important. According to TechCrunch, “Stories with content more similar to and representative of a creator’s typical feed posts are more likely to show up on Explore.”  That means sticking to an aesthetic. Consider integrating more video content to your stories as well! Even GIFs or animated features can help you create more dynamic, interactive stories.

Use hashtags well

Hashtags are a huge part of Instagram, and using them well actually boosts your chances of getting on the Instagram explore page. Now that users can follow hashtags, getting strategic about hashtag use is a great way to open yourself up to new followers. As usual with Instagram, the more niche you can get, the better.

Tag people and brands

If an influencer account or an account with a broader reach interacts with yours, that’s a big boost to your engagement – and it significantly ups your chances of getting on the explore page. By tagging people and brands you signify that there’s a relationship between the two accounts. The Instagram algorithm notices this and it might suggest you to followers of that account in their Explore page.

Don’t be afraid of IGTV.

IGTV can feel like a huge commitment, but don’t be afraid to try it out! The IGTV section is the first one users see on the app, and it’s a great way for new followers to get to know you and your brand. Make sure you’re creating quality content and you’re bound to attract new followers in no time.

Use CTAs (Calls to Action).

Part of engagement is eliciting it. Have you noticed a lot of the posts on the Instagram explore page end with a question or a “Like if you agree!”. There’s a reason for that! They are subtle ways to entice followers to engage with your content.

With these tips, you can make the Instagram explore page algorithm work for you!
